Malaysia

Malaysia is the home to the world’s most coveted variety of durian, the Musang King also known as Mao Shan Wang or D197. Malaysia however produces a number of other varieties as well such as D24, Golden Phoenix, Red Prawn. While the Musang King can fetch prices as high as 20-25 USD/KG these other varieties are typically sold for 6-10 USD/KG due to different taste and texture profiles.

Malaysia’s production of durian is concentrated in the Eastern Region of the country which produces approximately 50% of total supply. On a state basis, Pahang accounts for 30% of total production followed by Kelantan and Johor with 17% and 12%, respectively. Although Pahang is believed by many to be the birthplace of the Musang King, it is rather Gua Musang in the state of Kelantan.

Malaysia currently accounts for less than 5% of global durian exports due to ineffective management of their plantations and inadequate supplies. Limited musang king supplies have resulted in prices reaching record highs year after year spurred from demand from China. As a result, AGRI Developments is consulting with plantations to effectively improve cultivation, expand supply and cater towards high value export markets.
